Ms. P, my cooperating teacher, is amazing. Simply put: she is who I want to be in the next 10 years. She most definitely has the right personality for teaching, loves to talk, but also understands the expectations she has for her students. She teachers both regular and honors English II classes and has taught at Central for 8 years.
One of the most interesting things I learned today was that Ms. P worked in marketing for 17 years before becoming an English teacher. I love the idea that even after working at a job for many years, it is possible to change your outlook and really pursue something that you love.
We also discussed the types of work that she will have me do. For the past five years, she has had a student teacher, so she is more than aware of the types of work that student teachers must put into the classroom and the experience they need to succeed. Though I am a practicum student, she also wants me to gain as much experience as possible before I student teach. I am a little apprehensive at taking the lead, but Ms. P has years of experience and is so kind and caring that I could not be in better hands!
I have also identified a possible student for my case study. At Central, they have a "middler" program, which, from what I understand, allows younger students with high IQs to take upper level classes. For example, the student that I am considering most likely skipped a grade or two in elementary school and is now in middle school. However, he is in Ms. P English II honors class. I am going to watch him in the upcoming class periods to see how he interacts with the other students, as well as his performance in the class as compared to older students.
Overall, today was a good day. Not much was going on because the students were in the library, but I was able to watch them and talk with Ms. P, who is more than willing to tell me anything I need to know. I'm definitely looking forward to next week.
